Unique Non-Destructive Ultrasonic Technique for Welding Inspection

Time of Flight diffraction  is unique non-destructive ultrasonic technique employed primarily for welding inspection, does capable to detect the flaws in engineering components weldments as well as its heat affected zones. Time of flight diffraction technique is the quick and reliable way to assess the welding quality and the test results are easily reproducible. It can able to locate and measure the most of welding defects including critically oriented indications which does not typically detected by conventional methods.


Time of flight diffraction technique involves two probes, namely transmitter probe to release the ultrasonic pulse and a receiver probe to catch up the signals. These probes positioned in opposite across the weld, of region of inspection/interest. Any flaws/defects present in it, resulting in diffraction of the ultrasonic sound wave will eventually detected by receiver probe and location and configuration predicted by trigonometry concepts.



TOFD technique is used for monitoring the cracks in the critical engineering components and serves the essential role in the welding structural integrity assignments. This technique is versatile and readily coupled with other NDT methods for other intended inspection purposes.
