Examine the Root Penetration for Potential Failure Zone

Fracture test also known as fillet weld break test to examine the weld quality across the fillet weld rather at specific location in the case of weld macro examination.

In fracture test the fillet weld coupons subjected to fracture in a destructive way to examine the root penetration. It is primarily carried to verify/examine the potential failure zones in the fillet weld especially at the stop & restart of the weld operations. The bend test resulting on fractured weld coupon verifies for weld discontinuities as well. Few of the test methods are listed below.

  • ISO 9017 : Destructive tests on welds in metallic materials — Fracture test
  • ASME SEC. IX : Welding, Brazing & Fusing Qualifications
  • ISO 9017 : Destructive tests on welds in metallic materials — Fracture tests
  • ISO 5817 : Welding — Fusion-welded joints in steel, nickel, titanium and their alloys (beam welding excluded) — Quality levels for imperfections
  • API 1104 : Standard for welding pipelines & Related Facilities.
