Series of Quality Control Checks to Ensure Sound Weld
Welding inspection typically consists of a series of quality control checks carried out by welding inspectors. It ensures welded joints meet required levels of quality and are fit for purpose. A range of welding inspection techniques may be applied, depending on factors such as joint configuration, specific defects of interest, material type/thickness and whether in shop or on site.
The qualified inspectors are well competent in various construction codes, various NDT techniques, various damage mechanism, welding and corrosion of metals having qualification in ASNT, AWS, CSWIP and NACE.
WELDING INSPECTION METHODS
Our experienced welding inspectors are competent in fusion welding processes, easily identify typical weld defects, conversant in types of steel (including carbon-manganese, low alloy and stainless steels), the hardening of steels, weldability, heat treatment, and parent metal defects.
- Visual Inspection – When performed correctly, a visual inspection is often the easiest and least-expensive method for many applications. However, a good-looking weld doesn’t always ensure internal quality, and discontinuities aren’t always visible to the naked eye. Information relating to weld size are gathered and checked.
- Surface Crack Detection – Used to detect fine cracks, seams, porosity, and other surface-breaking discontinuities, surface crack detection is usually applied using one of two methods: liquid penetrant inspection or magnetic particle inspection.
- Radiographic and Ultrasonic Weld Inspection – Methods known as Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and used typically to examine the internal structure of the weld in order to establish the weld’s integrity without destroying the welded component.
